Glacier Adventure Day Trip
Full Day
$279.00
Depart at 9:00 am from the Chitina Airport and take a spectacular flight through Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. See the major peaks of both the Wrangell and St. Elias mountain ranges, Kennicott, Root and Gates Glaciers, Stairway Icefall, Erie Mine, Kennicott and McCarthy. Join your guide on Main Street in Kennicott for a half day hike on the Root Glacier with sack lunch included. A moderate hike takes you to the Root Glacier where you will strap on crampons and step onto a undulating blue river of ice. Along the way your guide will explain the natural history of the area, including wildflowers, geology and the effects glaciers have had upon the landscape. Strap on your crampons and take your first steps onto the otherworldly terrain of an Alaskan glacier. Hike out across the ice as far as you can, discovering the many different features on the surface of the glacier: crevasses, moulons and perhaps even an ice cave. The color and beauty of these features will astound you. (For the less adventurous or mobile, we offer a Kennicott History Tour and lunch at Kennicott Glacier Lodge). Hop the shuttle to the frontier town of McCarthy to visit the local museum and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of an Alaskan bush community. Explore the historic town built in the early part of the century. Enjoy the scenic flight back departing at 5:00 pm.

Root Glacier Hike

No where else in Alaska can you so easily access an immense alpine glacier. In Kennecott you will be fitted for crampons (spikes strapped on the bottom of your boots for traction while exploring the ice of the Root Glacier). The first mile and a half follows an old wagon road, and we stop several times along the way to discuss glaciology and geology, and view 16,390 ft. Mt. Blackburn. At the glacier we strap on our crampons and with simple instruction and practice; you'll feel secure walking on the ice. Numerous glacial streams cut deep ravines in the ice and form shimmering azure blue pools. As the ice gives way to the melting water, incredible waterfalls cascade deep into the glacier. Adventurers of ALL ages and abilities have joined us on this hike, from elderly visitors with NO hiking experience, to intrepid trekkers. We leave Kennecott at 9:30 am and return in the early afternoon, with no set schedule, so we may walk leisurely during the day.
For adventurers who want to expand their horizons and explore more of the Root Glacier, we offer the full day hike. When the morning hikers head back to Kennecott, these explorers will set their sights on the cascading waterfall flowing off of Donoho Peak into an immense cavern underneath the Root and Kennicott Glaciers, or head towards the 7,000 foot Stairway Icefall. More time - more glacier - more ice canyons and blue pools and moulins (vertical waterfalls disappearing into the depths of the ice).
Kennicott Glacier Fly In
Full Day
$315 Adult
The bush flight in ascends directly up the center of the Kennicott Glacier giving you a birds-eye view of the ice world below. We land on a tiny dirt strip nestled in the fel (the area between the lateral morraine and the adjoining mountain sides) of the Kennicott Glacier. Walking among dazzling purple shooting-stars and alpine forget-me-nots, we will ascend this level terrain to a gentle ridge that gives way to a panoramic view of 16,390 ft. Mt. Blackburn lying ten miles distant. We are surrounded by hanging glaciers, immense icefalls and craggy peaks. We can climb higher for more expansive views, or cross the lateral moraine and explore the ice of the Kennicott Glacier. You leave the "peopled" area behind on this adventure, and truly experience the stillness of this remote wilderness. Though close-by McCarthy, it is worlds away.
