Self Drive Tours - FAQ

Q: Do you offer one-way rentals between Alaska and the Yukon/Canada?

A: No we don’t. Government regulations do not permit such rentals.

Q: I like to spend more time in a particular area. Can I add a night to the tour or change the routing?

A: Most of our tours are flexible and we can add or exchange nights in destinations to suit your timetable and preferred routing. Thus, sometimes it will be necessary to observe ferry schedules in order to match certain dates and/or departures.

Q: What’s about accommodation?

A: Each tour includes a choice of pre-reserved superior (*** category) or first class hotels (**** category) If you have any special requirements we can certainly customize any of the advertised tours. Please contact us for advice and applicable rates. Hotel accommodation does not include breakfast or other meals. We are able to offer bed and breakfast (B&B) accommodation (breakfast included) for any of the advertised itineraries at the superior hotel rate.

Q: What’s about car rentals?

A: The rental of a compact car (automatic) is always included in the rates advertised. If you prefer a mid/full size car, a passenger van or a 4x4 please contact us for upgrade price details. Our advertised rates include also local taxes, free mileage, limited insurance coverage, roadside assistance and 24-hour emergency support. Because of high airport improvement fees (up to 15 %) for rental car pick-ups from the airport we provide you with the vehicle of your choice on our downtown stations. Important Note: Canadian citizen are not permitted to drive a US licensed rental car from Alaska to Canada.

Q: What if something unexpected goes wrong during the tour?

A: We do not anticipate anything but you can call us anytime toll-free for assistance if necessary.

Q: What type of Identification do I need to enter the Yukon/Canada?

A: • Native-born US Citizens: Copy of Birth Certificate, US Passport or Voter Registration card, and a form of photo ID • Naturalized US Citizens: Naturalization Certificate or US Passport, and a form of photo ID • US Residents (non-citizens): Alien Registration Receipt Card (US form I-151 or 1-551) • All International Visitors: Valid passport with proper travel documents (I-94, Canadian Visa if required, IAP-66, J-forms etc) • Foreign Exchange Students: must bring along all appropriate paperwork including an IAP-66 (pink form) in addition to their passport and I-94 card. • Persons under the age of 18 who are not accompanied by their parent or legal guardian should bring a letter from parent or guardian giving them permission to travel to Canada.

Q: What kind services are included in your tours?

A: Please refer to the appropriate tour page for a listing of includings. Our service generally includes the rental car, accommodation, all applicable taxes, ferry transportation as scheduled, sightseeing as per itinerary, a detailed tour description, highway or road logs. Not included are: Meals, highway tolls, gasoline, entrance fees, additional sightseeing tours, optional premium car insurance, airport fees.

Q: Should I book a self-drive tour or should I travel with a escorted motorcoach group?

A: This depends on your personal preference. Alaska and the Yukon are providing some good and scenic highway connections and driving is very easy. A rental car and individual hotels are an independent way to discover the beauty of the wilderness areas and national parks: You can stop were you want, you have plenty of time for sightseeing off the beaten path and you are very flexible. Other tours are usually very limited in flexibility because you are traveling with a group and fixed departures and routings.

Q: Why should I book my vacation far in advance?

A: The northern tour season is very short and available accommodation within the national park areas and gateway cities such as Anchorage, Fairbanks and Whitehorse is limited. Therefore, we highly recommend reserving your tour as early as possible to avoid common sold out situations especially during July and August.

Q: When should I travel?

A: June and September are perfect months for a vacation within the Land of the Midnight Sun. The weather is usually stable and sunny with almost 24 hours of daylight. July and August are prime travel months and very busy.

Q: What’s about sightseeing options?

A: We provide a variety of optional sightseeing adventures including flightseeing, hiking, rafting and day cruises. If you book these tours in advance you will save about 10 % from the regular rate.

Q: Should I compare rates on the Internet?

A: Yes definitely. You will notice sooner or later who is serious with his promises or who is “blowing hot air“ because meanwhile almost everyone claims that he/she either has the largest selection or most affordable tour program just for you. Compare the actual rates and ensure they are current because some web sites are not updated for years, check all services included, look for hidden charges such as reservation or ticketing fees and of course - taxes - and than make your decision.

Q: Could I organize the same tour package by myself for less money?

A: Probably not - because tour operator and corporate identities receive always much lower and prefered rates than an individual person or a travel agent. In addition you may spend a significant amount of time to find the right products, call the different supplier, exchange Information and get professional help and advise for your entire vacation tour package. Virtually impossible
