Redoubt Bay Bear Viewing

The lodge at Redoubt Bay is located at the entrance to Lake Clark Pass and offers the only accommodations within a 171,000 acre critical habitat area. This small, rustic lodge sits on a small knoll overlooking Big River Lakes, a chain of lakes whose waters lead to the Big River and on to Cook Inlet. We are located 50 minutes by air southwest of Anchorage. The flight via float plane offers spectacular scenic views of the Cook Inlet and the western edge of the Kenai Peninsula.

The Lodge

The small main lodge is a hand-hewn historic log cabin. You will notice the weather reporting equipment in the lodge. Our lodge managers are weather observers for the National Weather Service and report when pilots can fly through the sometimes-treacherous Lake Clark Pass. The small lodge offers dining facilities and the kitchen where all lodge meals are prepared. There is a small reference library as well as games, stationery, and postcards for writing home. In the planning stage is a new extension of the lodge to the south from the current kitchen and dining area.

We have three guest cabins, demonstrating typical "Alaska bush" construction of log cabins. They feature simple private baths with one and two bedrooms. The cabins are heated by a woodstove located in the small front room for relaxing. The lodge provides linen, daily housekeeping service, and other amenities. The cabins offer a pleasant view of the lake from its decks.

Activities

The emphasis at Redoubt Bay during the summer months is the spectacular natural terrain surrounding the lodge, the local wildlife residents, and what we can learn from this fragile and special environment.

The Fishing - We are constantly exploring our neighborhood for new fishing waters and angling adventures to offer. We can also arrange a fly-out to nearby fishing areas.

Bear Viewing- Because of the salmon population at Big River Lakes, there are many bears that feed in the local area. We are working hard to protect our resident bears and co-exist with them. A trained naturalist guide will take you for an up close and safe view of our nearest neighbors.

Canoeing - We have canoes and kayaks available at the lodge for checking out the meandering coves of Big River Lakes. Spend a few minutes or all day exploring the famous Big River Lakes area.

Photography Opportunities - Big River Lakes offers a spectacular setting for novice and professional wilderness and outdoor photographers. The critical habitat area established at Redoubt Bay is to protect the millions of birds that migrate, nest and live in the area. It is the world's only nesting ground for the Tule goose, a sub-species of the White-fronted goose. At least one-third of all birds recorded in Alaska can be viewed here. Ask to borrow a set of binoculars for bird viewing!
