Nome is built on a bench of gently sloping coastline on the shores of the Bering Sea, 540 air miles west of Fairbanks, 510 air miles northwest of Anchorage, and only seven jet minutes from Siberia.
"There’s no place like Nome!" shouts the city’s mottoand it’s true. When gold was found in the sands near the mouth of Anvil Creek east of town in 1898, yet another of Alaska’s gold rushes was on. By the turn of the century, 20,000 miners were working the beaches of Norton Sound and upstream placer depositsone-third of Alaska’s non-native population at the time. By 1905 the rush faded and the population stabilized at around 5,000, where it remains to this day. Gold history litters the region, including the ghost town of Solomon, the abandoned locomotives of "the train to nowhere," and several rusting dredges.
Summer temperatures are ranging from 40 to 70 degrees. However, frost is possible during any month of the year, though it is unlikely in July and August.
The entire seaward population of the city is protected by a 3350-foot-long sea wall of granite boulders. These huge rocks were trucked in from Cape Nome, 13 miles distant, at a cost of more than one million dollars.
