Remote and wild, the Misty Fjords National Monument is one of Alaska’s best kept secrets. Narrow fjords, just a quarter mile wide, stretch inland following the ever retreating glaciers into Canada. Sheer sided walls plunge 3500 feet from their snow clad tops to salt water and bear the grooves from the rocks and ice that formed them. Trees cling in a crazed fashion growing in any crack that will support their roots. Pristine alpine lakes fill bowl shaped valleys and send waterfalls cascading down the rock walls. Eagles soar the ridge tops. Mountain goats spring along tiny rock ledges. Whales, porpoise, seals and sea lion ply the inlets. Black and brown bear feed along the salmon streams and wolves and deer forage along the beaches. Beaver ponds abound.
The majestic landscape at Misty Fjords was created by thousands of years of glaciation and other earth processes. The unique Fjords were created by volcanoes, moving snow and ice, and wave action. Mineral springs and volcanic lava flows add to the unique geological features. Misty Fjords, often called one of America’s natural “Crown Jewels,” is truly an outstanding scenic wonder.

TOUR ITINERARY

The day starts early, portside in Ketchikan, as we board our fast boat to cruise to the Misty Fjords. On board we will enjoy panoramic views as we travel up the Behm Canal exploring the wilderness and wildlife along the way. We stop at New Eddystone Rock, a 237 foot volcanic plug rising vertically above the ocean.
Leaving the open water of the Behm Canal we enter Rudyerd Fjord. Here, beneath 3,000 foot granite cliff walls we will launch the kayaks and take to the water to explore the heart of the Misty Fjords National Monument. Your guide will run through the basics of paddling and help you master the skills you will need for the day. Our kayaks are stable fibreglass boats and no prior experience is necessary to join our trip.
The Fjords offer the opportunity to sit beneath cascading waterfalls, tumbling from alpine lakes high above. At stream mouths, from July on, we can watch salmon returning back from the open ocean, fighting their way up steam. Often we will be lucky enough to watch brown bears with their young feeding in the streams. The kayaks provide a safe and unobtrusive way to observe the wildlife around us.
Lunch is included and will be served picnic style on a wilderness beach. Afterwards we will have the chance to walk through the rainforest and to explore the cool shade beneath huge Sitka Spruce trees and to walk bare foot on beds of soft moss. The more energetic may wish to hike and take in the beauty of an alpine lake.
Wildlife in the Misty Fjords is diverse and we can see both brown and black bears, Sitka black-tailed deer, wolves and mountain goats. Beaver, mink, marten, wolverine, and river otter are common small animals. In the Behm Canal porpoises, whales, sea lions, and seals are often sighted. |
