ACTIVITIES

Prince William Sound Kayak & Camping Adventure
Explore Icy Bay from Whittier

This exciting trip is a magnificent combination of wildlife, wilderness and super scenic paddling. In this mountainous and remote section of the sound we are unlikely to see other paddlers. The area is very rich with wildlife such as deer, bear, otters, salmon and seals. Best of all, it is one of the best places in the sound to encounter whales! Nassua Fjord is home to the impressive Chenga tidal glacier over two miles wide, it's a good spot to learn about the do's and don't around ice and glaciers. From April through October, humpback whales feed in Whale Bay. The humpbacks can often be enjoyed from the comfort of camp. Of course, paddling beside humpbacks is truly a unique and humbling experience. The following paddle plan represents the possibilities of this area. This route is subject to change to facilitate whale watching, and prevailing conditions.

Day 02 Whittier - Ewan Bay
After breakfast we continue our journey and paddle towards Icy Bay. Already we will have to navigate through chunks of ice. At Nassau Fjord we will look out for a good place to pitch our camp for the night. After lunch we paddle towards Chenega Glacier, one of the biggest and most powerful glaciers in the Sound. Its face is over 2 miles wide and 300 feet tall. We find a clear route through the "frozen margarita" ice to an isolated beach at the base of Tigertail Glacier. From here, we have an awe inspiring close-up view of Chenega as it calves giant icebergs into the sea. Hiking up from the beach we climb onto the foot of Tigertail Glacier. Watch hundreds of Harbor seals resting on the icebergs. We maybe lucky and spot a black bear or deer along the shoreline; there are also numerous salmon streams and waterfalls. Bald eagles are abundant. If time allows we will paddle into Gaamaak Cove to visit the black legged Kittiwake rookery.

Day 03 Ewan Bay - Chenega Bay - Icy Bay
After a delicious breakfast we pack up our gear and paddle from Icy Bay or Nassau Fjord. Today we visit the spectacular Chenega (if we haven't already) or Tiger Glaciers, both emanating from the expansive Sargent Ice Field. The scenery changes, as the mountains become even more dramatic. The fjord is narrow and vertical with an unbelievable amount of waterfalls. This is also an excellent area to see more black bears. We land at a beach that is safe but is "almost too close" to watch the Tiger glacier calve icebergs. We will then paddle the opposite shore of Icy Bay, and set up camp at Dual Head for the next two nights.

Day 04 Icy Bay
We will continue to explore in Icy Bay, as well as Whale Bay, Humpback Cove, and Orca Cove. As we enter Humpback cove, the mountains and glaciers surrounding the Sargent Icefield comes into view. It is about 6 miles to our next camp, which we will paddle in a couple of hours.

Day 05 Icy Bay - Whittier
We will continue to explore these areas, and break camp for a mid-afternoon water taxi back to Whittier.
