Camping & Kayaking Tour - Admiralty Island, Alaska |
Admiralty Island is a lush rainforest wilderness with the largest population of bald eagles and density of brown bears in the world. In fact, the native Tlingit People call the island Kootznoowoo, the “Fortress of the Bears.” Admiralty Island has the heaviest population of bear of any place in the world. This one island has 2,400 bears. More than all of the lower 48 states combined! From Juneau we take a scenic floatplane flight that brings us to a secluded beach and our comfortable base camp. From here we’ll kayak along the shores and to world-famous Pack Creek Brown Bear Sanctuary. We have seen bears fishing for salmon, nursing, sleeping, playing, and even charging each other.

Day 01
The next morning we will drive to the airport. There is a body of water that is adjacent the runway where all of the floatplanes are docked. We board a floatplane and fly about 50 miles southwest to a spot near Staunch Point, at the mouth of Windfall Harbor on Admiralty Island. After unloading our gear we set up camp a few miles from the sanctuary. After a delicious lunch our kayak guide will give us some kayaking advise and we begin exploring this fascinating wilderness. In the evening you have time for beachcoming, watching the diverse marine life and getting to know the other group members. |
Day 02
The second day we paddle over to Pack Creek Bear Sanctuary. Each day only 24 people are issued permits to enter this restricted area. We unload our day supplies and place them in bear proof, underground, steel lockers. The entire day we will spend watching for bears, hoping to see several family groups with playful cubs. After lunch we will hike about a mile over a small ridge to a 20 foot tall viewing tower located up stream near a wide spot in the creek in the middle of a densely wooded forest. Depending on the season the stream is solid packed with pink and chum salmon. Watch the bears fish for the salmon and older bears chasing the young ones.

Day 03
After another night in our wilderness campsite, we will have a relaxing morning until our floatplane takes us on another beautiful flight over the northern end of Admiralty Island and back to Juneau. We will arrive in Juneau in early afternoon, and the trip ends with a transfer to your hotel or other destination. |
